Waxing vs sugaring, shaving and threading: which suits where
How waxing, sugaring, shaving and threading compare by area of the body and type of skin, the difference between hard, soft and sugar wax, and which we carry.
Waxing and threading
Waxing vs sugaring, shaving and threading is really a question of where on the body and what kind of hair. Waxing and sugaring both take hair from the root and last weeks; shaving cuts it at the surface and lasts days; threading takes hair from the root too, but one row at a time, which makes it the right tool for the face and the wrong one for a leg. Below is how they compare, area by area, and what Hamd Beauty carries: warm wax for the body and threading for the brows, and no sugaring.
The four methods in one table
| Method | How it works | Where it suits | Smooth for | Hair length needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Waxing | Warm wax grips the hair; removed with a strip (soft) or by hand (hard) | Legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, body | About three to five weeks | About half a centimetre |
| Sugaring | A sugar, lemon and water paste is moulded on and flicked off with the growth | Same areas as wax; some sensitive skins | About three to five weeks | Slightly shorter than wax |
| Shaving | A blade cuts the hair at the skin's surface | Anywhere, at home, between appointments | One to three days | Any |
| Threading | A twisted cotton thread lifts hairs from the root, a row at a time | Brows, upper lip, chin, sides of the face | About two to four weeks | Very short is fine |
None of these is "best". They are different tools, and most women use more than one.
Hard wax, soft wax and sugar wax: what is the difference?
Soft wax, also called strip wax, is spread in a thin layer and removed with a cloth or paper strip. It covers a leg quickly and grips fine hair well, which is why it is the usual choice for arms and legs. Because it adheres to skin as well as hair, it is used once per patch, never twice. The glossary describes soft wax.
Hard wax is applied thickly, allowed to set, and lifted off by its own edge without a strip. It shrink-wraps the hair and holds skin less, which makes it the gentler choice for the bikini line, underarms and face, and for coarse hair. It is slower over a large area. See hard wax.
Sugar wax is a paste of sugar, lemon juice and water, used warm rather than hot. The therapist moulds it onto the skin against the growth and flicks it off with the growth, reusing the same ball of paste as she goes. It is water-soluble, so it washes off with water, and many women with sensitive skin find it kinder. It needs practice to apply well and is slower than strip wax over legs. The glossary entry on sugaring has more.
Hamd Beauty uses warm wax for the body and does not offer sugaring. If sugaring is what your skin needs, we would rather say so than pretend the two are the same.
Which method for which area
Legs and arms
Waxing, with soft wax, is the quickest and most even over a large area, and the result lasts weeks. Sugaring works just as well if you prefer it. Shaving is fine between appointments, but it resets the cycle: the blunt regrowth feels coarser and the next wax is less comfortable.
Underarms
Hard wax or sugaring, because the skin is thin and the hair is coarse and grows in more than one direction. Shaving here is where most "shadow" and irritation comes from.
Bikini line
Hard wax, for the same reasons, or sugaring. This is not an area for strip wax on sensitive skin, and not one for a blunt razor.
Face
Threading for the brows, upper lip and chin. It is precise, it takes nothing from the skin, and it lifts even the fine hairs that wax leaves. Waxing the brows removes a strip of skin cells with the hair and can lift the delicate skin of the eyelid; we thread brows for that reason. Our page on threading or waxing for eyebrows goes into it.
Sensitive or reactive skin
Hard wax or sugaring for the body, threading for the face, and a patch test the first time. Tell your therapist about eczema, recent sunburn or any product that thins the skin.
How long does waxing last compared to shaving?
Shaving cuts hair at the surface, so stubble is back within one to three days and the hair returns with a blunt end that feels coarse. Waxing and sugaring remove the hair at the root, so the area is usually smooth for three to five weeks and the regrowth is finer and sparser. The gap depends on the area and on your own growth: legs hold longest, underarms and upper lip shortest. Our before and after waxing guide covers the preparation and the aftercare that make the result last.
Waxing vs laser and epilating
Laser hair removal reduces growth over a course of sessions in a clinic and is a different kind of decision, with a doctor or a licensed clinic rather than a beauty therapist. Between laser sessions you should shave, not wax, because the laser needs the root in place. An epilator pulls hairs mechanically one by one at home; it lasts about as long as waxing and suits legs and arms, but it is slower and many women find it less comfortable than a good wax.
