Keratin treatment at home in Dubai: keratin, protein or repair?
What keratin and protein smoothing treatments do, how long they last, what to ask before one, and why the repair treatment we offer at home is different.
Hair
If you are searching for a keratin treatment at home in Dubai, the first thing to know is that "keratin", "protein" and "repair" are three different things that salons often sell under one name. Keratin and protein treatments here usually mean a smoothing coat sealed into the hair with a hot iron, lasting two to four months. A repair treatment is a conditioning mask: it softens and strengthens hair for a few washes and does not straighten it. Hamd Beauty offers the repair treatment at home and not keratin or protein straightening, and this article explains the difference so you can choose.
What is a keratin treatment?
A keratin treatment is a smoothing service. A liquid formula is applied to clean hair, blow-dried in, then sealed with a flat iron at high heat, which bonds a smooth coating to the outside of each strand. The result is less frizz, a straighter fall, faster drying and more shine, for as long as the coating stays on.
Three points people often get wrong:
- It is not a repair. The coating sits on the hair and makes it behave better. It does not mend split ends or rebuild damaged hair, and the high heat used to seal it can leave already fragile hair drier.
- It is not permanent. It washes out over two to four months. Hair that grows afterwards is your own texture.
- It is not a relaxer. A relaxer changes the structure of the hair chemically and lasts until that hair is cut off. Keratin is a temporary coat.
How long does a keratin treatment last?
Two to four months for most hair, fading gradually rather than ending on a day. What shortens it: washing often, shampoos containing sulphates, sea water, chlorine and sweat. What lengthens it: washing less, a sulphate-free shampoo, and keeping the hair dry and untied for the first days after the treatment as the salon instructs.
The appointment itself is long, commonly two to three hours, because every section has to be blow-dried and ironed.
Is a keratin treatment safe?
This is general information, not medical advice, and we have not found a source we could read on this question during the writing of this article, so we will keep to what you can control.
Smoothing formulas differ a great deal, and the ingredient people ask about most is formaldehyde. Before you book one anywhere, ask for the product name, ask what is in it and whether it contains or releases formaldehyde, and read the answer on the manufacturer's own label rather than taking a verbal "it is free of everything". Have the treatment in a room with a window open or an extractor running. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have asthma or a skin condition, ask your doctor before booking, and say so to the salon. If your eyes or throat sting during a treatment, ask for it to stop.
On the question of hair loss: a coating applied to the hair shaft does not act on the root, but scalp irritation from the formula or from heat can affect the scalp. If you notice unusual shedding after any treatment, see a doctor rather than a stylist.
What is the difference between protein and keratin?
In Dubai salons the two words are close to interchangeable: a "protein treatment" or "Brazilian protein" is almost always another smoothing service, applied and sealed with heat in the same way as keratin and lasting a similar two to four months. Some formulas are sold as "cold protein" or as free of a particular ingredient; the questions above apply exactly the same.
There is a second, quieter meaning of protein. A protein or conditioning mask applied to the hair for a few minutes and rinsed out coats the strand with proteins that fill weak spots temporarily. It makes hair feel stronger and smoother for a few washes. It involves no flat iron, no straightening and no long appointment, and it is what a protein treatment means when it is done as a treatment rather than a smoothing.
So when a friend says her protein "did wonders", ask which one she means.
Keratin and protein compared with a repair treatment
| Keratin or protein smoothing | Repair treatment (conditioning mask) | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Reduce frizz, straighten the fall | Soften, strengthen, add shine |
| How | Formula sealed with a hot iron | Mask applied, left to work, rinsed |
| Straightens? | Yes, for its duration | No |
| Lasts | Two to four months | A few washes |
| Appointment | Two to three hours | About 90 minutes at home |
| Heat | High | Only the blow-dry at the end |
| Good for | Frizzy, wavy hair you want smooth | Dry, coloured or heat-worn hair |
| At Hamd Beauty | No | Yes |
What Hamd Beauty offers instead
We do not offer keratin, protein or any straightening treatment. What we offer is the repair treatment: a deep conditioning mask with a scalp massage and a blow-dry, 90 minutes at home. It is for hair that is dry, colour-treated, worn by heat or dulled by the water here. It leaves hair softer, smoother and shinier for the next few washes, without changing its texture. For what a mask can and cannot do for damaged hair, see repairing dry and damaged hair.
If you have had a keratin or protein treatment elsewhere, a conditioning mask is the usual way to keep the hair soft while it fades; check with the salon that did it which products they want kept off the hair in the first days.
What you can book
The repair treatment is on the hair menu, with a fresh cape liner and neck strip for every client. If what you want is smooth hair for one evening rather than months, the blow-dry gives you that without any coating at all.
