Sterilisation pouch
Also called: Autoclave pouch and Self-seal sterilisation bag
A sealed paper-and-film bag that tools are sterilised inside and stored in, keeping them sterile until the pouch is opened in front of the client.
A sterilisation pouch has a paper back and a clear film front, with a self-sealing strip at the open end. Clean, dry tools are placed inside and the strip is folded over to seal it. In the autoclave, steam passes through the paper to reach the tools; afterwards the paper acts as a barrier, so the contents stay sterile as long as the pouch is intact and dry. Most pouches carry a printed indicator that changes colour after a cycle.
The pouch is what turns a sterilised tool into a tool that is still sterile when it reaches you. Once opened, that protection is gone, which is why the pouch should be opened at the start of your service and not earlier.
What to check: the pouch is sealed, dry and undamaged, the indicator has changed, and it is opened in front of you. A pouch that is torn, damp or already open is a reason to ask questions.
Hamd Beauty seals its metal tools in pouches for the autoclave, and each pouch is labelled with its kit number.
