Sugaring (halawa)
Also called: Sugar wax and Halawa
Hair removal with a warm paste of sugar, lemon and water that is pressed onto the skin and flicked off, taking the hair with it.
Sugaring, known across the Gulf as halawa, uses a paste cooked from sugar, lemon juice and water. In the traditional method a ball of paste is pressed onto the skin against the direction of growth and flicked off in the direction of growth, so the hair is pulled the way it grows. A softer version is spread and removed with a strip, much like soft wax.
Many women prefer it because the paste washes off with warm water, is used at a lower temperature than wax and tends to stick to hair more than skin. It can also lift shorter hair. Results last about the same as waxing, commonly three to six weeks.
Sugaring is a skill in itself, and a good result depends on the person doing it. It is not suitable on sunburnt or broken skin, and the general cautions for waxing apply. This is general information, not medical advice.
Hamd Beauty does not offer sugaring at present. Its hair removal services are warm wax for the body and threading for the brows.
We do not offer this at present. It is explained here because people ask about it.
